Explosive Photography Desmond Downs Richard Beal eBook Reviews

If you've had a hankering to take some extremely high-speed pictures, this inexpensive book will, at the very least, give you some excellent ideas for do-it-yourself flash triggering. While you need to enjoy wiring things up to get the most benefit from this book, Desmond presents some interesting methods to fire your camera and flash fast enough to stop action on events you would normally never be able to photograph. There's even a few entertaining fireballs for those who enjoy photographing controlled carnage.

Throughout the book, Desmond has a keen sense of humor and several amusing anecdotes of times when things didn't go exactly as planned. If you've always wanted to photograph a hammer smashing a lightbulb, a water balloon exploding, a bullet through an apple, or a wire exploding from excessive amperage, but didn't want to spend a lot of money doing it; this is the book for you. Be sure to keep a fire extinguisher handy!
When a book contains the phrase "Now for the wiring diagram, to show you *what you shouldn't attempt.", you know it's gonna be a fun read.
An interesting and fun read.
Another great and cheap e-book to help me with my learning more and more about photography. Enjoy reading anything about photography and reading the hints and instructions.
If you can capture something with a high shutter speed this book will not tell you how to make a great photo out of it. But if you already have the artistic talent and knowledge and simply don't know how to time the capture with the event, this book may be for you. Written like a lab book, Desmond takes you through his experiments, what went right, what went wrong. Much of the stuff is geared towards electronic hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers. For those people, this book is perfect. And if I were one of those people, it would be a 5-star rating. Your "average" photographer who is looking for a way to create an unusual photograph but who doesn't want to deal with connecting wires, soldering circuits, etc., will be disappointed and not have much use for this book. The author is more an inventor than an artist, and to his credit, he states early on that the images you see are not artistic... and he's right, most of the photos are showing close-ups of capacitors, wires, switches, etc. So it didn't really help me too much because I just don't want to tinker with stuff, especially things that will make a mess. The 3-star rating is because the title and description is somewhat misleading. It's primarily aimed at electronics hobbyists who want to take photos of things blowing up. It's an easy read, but most of the experiments are indeed dangerous so you really do need to be careful. I wish him luck with his super-speed photography.
